MCEI Marketing Awards Hits a Glitch
It does not matter how much effort and planning you put into an event, things can still go wrong. MCEI has over a dozen Chapters around the World. Every two years they hold a World Congress and every other year they hold the Asia Pacific Conference.
In 2001 MCEI Melbourne held the World Congress with 95 International Delegates. This year Melbourne was requested to hold the Asia Pacific Conference in conjunction with the Marketing Awards. This Conference (by tradition) was to be held over 4 days.
Melbourne agreed and plans proceeded. With the wonderful help of Jennifer McQueen of Ausnindo, some wonderful business trips were organised. Speakers were gathered and a wonderful tourism day was planned.
What could go wrong? Everything was going along ‘swimmingly’ – then the bubble burst. Melbourne budgeted for a minimum of 40 International delegates and had to chose a venue of a high calibre to suit their needs. When one month out and it became obvious that those numbers were not going to be met, Melbourne had no option but to cancel the Conference.
Tears were shed, and no doubt some anger displayed by the many who were let down by this decision….but it was better than going bankrupt.
The good news is that the Awards will still be held and the calibre of entries indicates another tight decision. No one wins these awards unless they are truly deserving.
